I decided that I needed to update our blog readers on what is going on in our lives. It has been a long time since we have written. In August, when all my teacher friends were getting their classrooms ready and going to boring in-services, I was sleeping in and working on projects. My first subbing day was the second day of school in Hesston. It was fun to be a different classroom other than mine. Subbing definitely has its' advantages: I don't need to do any planning or grading. I have NO take home work. If I don't want to work, I don't! I don't have to jump through any hoops for the district or go to meetings and worry about assessments. On the flip side: I hate starting over every day. I have several classrooms that I have subbed in which I have gotten to know the kids' faces but not their names. I recently completed a 6-week long term sub in Goessel for some darling kindergartners. And I lived to tell about it! It was nice to know where I was going to be each day. The staff at the elementary school are topnotch and I really felt a home there.
When I sub a few days a week, I feel more in touch with what is going on at home. Like the growing pile of dirty dishes in the sink or who is trying to outsmart Judge Judy. :) So I missed time at home to get things done while I was teaching kindergarten. I have found out that I really like the part time job thing, it allows me to volunteer and do other things that I wouldn't have a chance to do if I was teaching full time.
If you shop at the Et. Cetera shop in Newton on any given Saturday, you can see me behind the register. I worked there one day a week in the summer and now I am on the "sub" list, but have been called every month to commit to a few Saturdays. It is a long day but I usually enjoy it. I am also providing child care for Circles of Hope every Tuesday evening. I have a 13 year old that helps as well as a retired school teacher. I plan an activity, usually a food or craft, we read books and just hang out with the kids. I continue to be the Congregational Secretary for our church. Recently, I had to send letters to people to be on committees. I sing (when not sick) with our Church's Praise Team and Choir (don't really enjoy choir too much). And in January, I will attend my first meeting member of Western District's Women's retreat committee. So I really have a lot to do when I am not subbing.
We are looking forward to Thanksgiving because my whole family is coming from PA, NYC and Vermont. So we are in the "cleaning mode". Wait... I think I hear it calling me....

My family came for Thanksgiving this year. We had a great time catching up, cooking and eating.
We visited the Salt Museum in Hutchinson on Friday and saw some movie characters. This is a mannequin of Agent Smith from The Matrix.
